Sometimes understanding something requires starting with what it is not. So Spiritual Accompaniment is not counselling or life coaching, though it may touch on these from time to time, and a good spiritual Companion will know how to signpost you to these if required

Spiritual Accompaniment is also not having someone theologically trained telling you what to think and do to grow closer to God. A good Spiritual Companion instead will walk with you, offering time, space, acceptance, and …. To discover for yourself who God is and where God is acting in the everydayness of life, and how you might follow more closely God’s guidance for your unique and particular life.

What is Spiritual Accompaniment?

A Spiritual Companion or Soul Friend does very little actual directing, which is why I avoid the term Spiritual Director. The Carmelite Tradition of Spiritual Direction states very clearly that the only director in the relationship is God. So when we meet together, we assume there are three of us in the room, and we are all listening and speaking in a beautiful flow of interaction with the Spirit of God, the primary source of inspiration and guidance.

We also assume that the Spirit of God is with each of us in every aspect of our life, so anything from your life can be brought into the sacred space for reflection, discernment, and prayer to seek that presence and learn to listen to it and become more and more familiar with it.

Who is Spiritual Companionship for?

Those seeking a soul friend come from all walks of life, and the ministry is often offered for free or for a donation you can afford to ensure it is available to all. Many clergy and deeply faithful Christians come seeking to find where God is in their ministry, others have had no dealings with a faith community or have left such communities, yet do not want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. The relationship with a religious community may have soured, but not their relationship with God, even if they no longer know who this God is that they have a relationship with.

If you are seeking or feel a pull to seek something more, then Spiritual Companionship may be right for you. It is, however, essential to know that my particular training is in the Christian tradition which recognises the figure of Jesus of Nazareth as the face of God in human form who testifies through his life, tecahings, death and resurrection to a God who is active and present in all aspects of life, including the difficult and dark times.

So, Spiritual Companionship is for anyone who seeks to grow in relationship with that something bigger than ourselves, whatever word or language we each may have for that something, whether we already have a relationship with that something or not, and whatever our religious/faith background.

Prayer of Anselm of Canterbury

Teach us to seek You, and reveal Yourself to us as we seek; for unless You instruct us, we cannot seek You, and unless You reveal Yourself, we cannot find You. Let us seek You in desiring You; let us desire You in seeking You. Let us find You in Loving You;

And we might add ‘Let us know you in the love you have for us. Amen’
